The fight on food insecurity

The fight against food insecurity.

Uganda is the largest producer of granular brown sugar in the Busoga region of Eastern Uganda. Many farmers have resorted to this lucrative activity to participate in increasing sugarcane in a way to survive. However, it comes with the costs of leaving families without any food to survive on. Many vulnerable families have rented out their farmlands at a low fee for a long time, the least being three years. But will they survive on that little money for that long time? NO!

Ryvanz-Mia Charity organization has come up with a plan to solve this mistake. Ryvanz-Mia Charity introduced the two meals per child a day program to ensure food security in these homes. How Ryvanz-Mia Charity (RMC) will achieve the consistency of food and nutritional values of these families is critical, depending on you.

Support for backyard gardening.

We at Ryvanz-Mia Charity have sensitized families to balance their diet for their children’s health. However vulnerable, at least to be healthy through feeding. We have designed support for backyard gardening through which simple vegetables can be grown by providing seeds for planting—greens such as the dodo, sukuma wiki, eggplants, and tomatoes. At the same time, many others can be harvested occasionally by our trained young farmers rather than sugarcane which takes longer and is not daily food.

We have engaged with our beneficiaries on the land tenure systems instead of not hiring out their whole pieces of land so that they cannot even grow food. And also, do not hire out the ground for long periods because the longer the period, the more food insecurity.

Introduction of farmer field schools in the community.

Ryvanz-Mia Charity is looking at working closely with our beneficiaries to introduce farmer field schools in the community. These field schools act as model gardens for the Farmers; for any principles and practices they learn, they apply them in their gardens based on the cluster radii of stay.

We are looking at food security that involves farming, not leaving out poultry and animal rearing. Ryvanz-Mia Charity designed this project through which a vulnerable family gets an animal. For example, once it births a calf, a cow is sent to the next vulnerable family to do the same to the last beneficiaries. Just a start of one cow will improve lives economically and nutritionally, not forgetting manure value to the backyard gardens. Food is life, and everybody needs it. At least a family needs a backyard garden for nutritional balance. Why not support one when the rains are here?
